At long last here is the unreleased (?) e.p. by Saint Huck recorded back in 1986. Two of the tracks did appear on the <a href="https://panicon13th.blogspot.com/2011/08/panic-on-13th-cassette-only-compilation.html" target="_blank">Panic On 13th</a> compilation cassette shortly after they were recorded but as far as I know nothing else ever saw the light of day. No idea why. Dan? Tim? Steve? Chris? I remember seeing them at the W.O.W. hall in 1985 or so when Dave Allen was the full time singer (I think?). As always, please leave any background/historical details in the comments and maybe in five to ten years I'll update the post. As everyone knows, Steve, Dan & Tim continued on together in the Cherry Poppin' Daddies just three years later. The two bonus tracks are sourced from a cassette John O'Neil made for me in 1987. I've heard there are other tracks that were recorded but I've never been in possession of them. Everything I know about these guys is in the article posted above from an Alaska newspaper in 1983; evidently they toured. The band released two singles during their tenure and it would shock me if there wasn't a cassette out there somewhere too. The first single "Used To Keep Me Up All Night b/w Runaway Home" was released in 1978 making it the earliest recording this blog has been able to come up with so far. The second single "Wino (Oo My Baby Is A) b/w Never Did Nothin' That I Didn't Wanna Do" followed five years later in 1983. Patrick noted that the A side of this one sounded like a precursor to the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and I have to say I'd agree with him. It's in the energy rather than the instrumentation. Hope you enjoy!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tDl4qYeqcK4/YXbzpXTKWCI/AAAAAAAABxQ/8YtoK8XNMUMe4kfQ1DxbHlnch1cY0wFlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1409/Tattoo%2BCover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1409" data-original-width="1394" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tDl4qYeqcK4/YXbzpXTKWCI/AAAAAAAABxQ/8YtoK8XNMUMe4kfQ1DxbHlnch1cY0wFlgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Tattoo%2BCover.jpg" width="317" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ULJmSbl4hjs/YXbzpVVze_I/AAAAAAAABxM/6O0ykbXze3EqX-ZJyN3o-96cwqR1g6YsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s762/Used%2BTo%2B%2528A%2BSide%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="742" data-original-width="762" height="312" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ULJmSbl4hjs/YXbzpVVze_I/AAAAAAAABxM/6O0ykbXze3EqX-ZJyN3o-96cwqR1g6YsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Used%2BTo%2B%2528A%2BSide%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cg9SEpyKjTY/YXbzpXbLNVI/AAAAAAAABxI/AjGkkNRkDFsqpvGRT8L8REM5_3R8nbarwCLcBGAsYHQ/s772/Used%2BTo%2B%2528B%2BSide%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="754" data-original-width="772" height="313" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cg9SEpyKjTY/YXbzpXbLNVI/AAAAAAAABxI/AjGkkNRkDFsqpvGRT8L8REM5_3R8nbarwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Used%2BTo%2B%2528B%2BSide%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XDedFtnGMPA/YXbzsJ73SFI/AAAAAAAABxU/0w2oNVw8V2kZ6cppyPhueAuzjWq9b-X_gCLcBGAsYHQ/s603/Wino%2B%2528A%2BSide%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="603" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XDedFtnGMPA/YXbzsJ73SFI/AAAAAAAABxU/0w2oNVw8V2kZ6cppyPhueAuzjWq9b-X_gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Wino%2B%2528A%2BSide%2529.jpg" width="318" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HUVppAnsgwA/YXbzsHKCsQI/AAAAAAAABxY/eiFy5theGZEvgDDgMNVkbcpSZqJeq8ynwCLcBGAsYHQ/s600/Wino%2B%2528B%2BSide%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HUVppAnsgwA/YXbzsHKCsQI/AAAAAAAABxY/eiFy5theGZEvgDDgMNVkbcpSZqJeq8ynwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Wino%2B%2528B%2BSide%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gnTUzBfWuh0h2u4siWlfxNQR6jxhnryc/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">DOWNLOAD HERE</a></span></b></div><br /> </div><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cVQGl4ZM6_8/YXbxM5gY4bI/AAAAAAAABw0/rD9lvyzUpgAojReWgbrR6c73Bfhky4WqwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Tattoo%2B002.jpg" style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: left;"><br /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4904569522201109457.post-80960380278589711542021-10-21T16:32:00.000-07:002021-10-21T16:32:31.907-07:00A Few Chairs (1984-89)<br />

This tape was officially released but I don't have a copy anymore and I don't think the cover is going to turn up anytime soon so I'm going with what I've got. Not having the cover also means I don't know many of the song titles, Mimi or Marty if you want to help out please do! I think this is from 1986. Got most of the track names, thanks Hans!</span></div>

As many of you know, there was an attempt at a Eugene documentary in 2005-06 that was abandoned for reasons I was never quite clear on. One positive thing that came out of all of it was the reunion show. I was given a pile of material collected for the project after it was abandoned and the blog was born in 2011. I procrastinate. </div>

My first band played with Zombie Toolshed once and they were much better than us which isn't really setting the bar high. What I mean to say is that Zombie Toolshed were a fun punk rock band, I don't know a lot about their history but I don't think they were around long, maybe a year or two? <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the story of Clear My Name, huge thanks to Scott McLean for the bio that follows and to Mary Kroeker who shot and provided the photos:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: black; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;">In, on, near or somewhere around December of 1985 I found myself in Alix's mom's basement for the first time with Alix, Casey and Jeff. In that moment I had no idea that for the next 16 months we would practically live together in that basement, coming up occasionally for fresh air, food, or maybe school. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span face="Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: black; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;">Alix and I had tried out a few other guitar and bass players for whatever our new band was going to be but everyone was too something. Too hardcore. Too ska. Too free jazz freak out.
Casey and Jeff arrived via a recommendation by Pete Shanahan who had played with them in their first band, The Skeptics. And, as it turned out, Casey was (and still is) the younger brother of Nat who played bass in my first band, The Difference.
I have no idea what we played that night but we agreed it worked well and declared ourselves a band. And then there we were, a nameless band of four self taught kids [Alix (18), Scott (17), Casey (16) and Jeff (15)] throwing off our cover band past and hell bent on playing original music that we hadn't yet written.
By March of 1986 we had five original songs and booked a weekend at Trey Gunn's Subliminal Studios to record the 'Death of the Avant Garde' EP. Our studio naïveté was well on show that weekend but it reached its apex at the end of the session when we learned that not only did we owe for the two day hourly rates but also for the master tape of our recording. We didn't have, and couldn't get, the money to buy the master so Trey dubbed a copy onto a cassette, telling me that he'd hold the master for a month before erasing it to reuse. I never went back. It's a decision I have regretted ever since. From that one cassette ten cassettes were dubbed. I kept one and the rest went to the holy grail local cassettes case at the House of Records. Then the original was eaten by a glutton of a tape deck that I knew couldn't be trusted but did anyway. Which meant the next ten copies were dubbed off my copy from the first batch of dubs. And you know the story of generation loss so we'll leave it at that. It took 34 years to track down a copy from the first generation of dubs (Thank you Mary!).
And now you can listen to it here!
After that session everything becomes a swirling blur of a year. We started playing out on a regular basis as we kept writing, recording our new songs on the trusted Fostex X-15 4-track for what I'd planned on being a full length album. All told we committed five original songs to tape, one re-record of a track from Death of the Avant Garde and two covers. And now you can listen to them here!
The only other recording known to exist is from August of 1986. It was recorded in the practice basement by our friend Mary (Thanks again, Mary!). It has the muffled echo of a basement recording but is interesting because it contains the three songs that would have flushed out the full length album but were never recorded (and also for a one minute bashing instrumental take of The Who's "Real Me").
And now you can listen to it here!
And then we were done. Questions about the where's and when's and why's and how's of the end of Clear My Name are met with a collective shrug. It just happened. There was no epic explosion. No throwing of fists or guitars. No names called. No fingers pointed. It was simply time. We all just wandered off one day in different directions and kept on wandering.
Thanks for listening and thanks for being a part of our memories from an amazing, wonderful time in Eugene, OR.
Scott
I (and the band) want to thank Jeff for gently reminding me about every two years that we really should get this project done and shared. He is a very patient man. Thank you, Jeff.</span></div>

CD you're listening to is the result of bored kids living in Oregon. The
weather was bad and there was nothing to do. But there was cheap beer and LSD
was plentiful. What you hear is the sound of soggy clothes, bad acid, and PBR.
It was recorded on a 4-track in southeast Portland between 1992 and 2000 and
mixed in San Francisco in 2003 off 2nd and third generation tapes so the sound
quality is poor at times, but hey so are we. If you want something slick,
generic, and commercial, you can always buy a Fugazi or Sleater-Kinney release.
This Cheezy Trollz release is limited to 250 copies and won't be released in
this fashion again. Great care has been given to assure that all 250 packages
are different hand-colored and numbered - all filled with different stuff, most
of it found on the street. The one cosistency is all CD's will have screen
printed canvas covers, come in a plastic bag with a box of macaroni and cheeze,
a condom, a spork, a breath mint, and a little pamphlet with cartoons and
lyrics. Like the one you are reading right now, Jackass. Bon Appetite. And
remember... WE DINED FOR YOUR SINS."</span><span face=""arial" , sans-serif" style="font-size: 10pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

A great history of the band from our comments section on a past Now William post:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span face="Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif" style="background-color: #141414; color: white; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">The first incarnation of Now William formed in Joseph, Oregon, likely around 1984-85, when I was away for a year as an exchange student. It seems that the name in part came from a song the Benji Heiney sang super imposed over Wang Chung's "Fun Tonight".... Hey Now, Hey Now William. I'm guessing at the time that Now William was Benji Heiney, Tyler Hays, Brian Coughlan and Charlie McClain (and possibly Andrew Crenshaw). I'll have to ask all of them for their recollections. They'll likely correct me all over the place, but me putting this up here forces them to set the record straight on anything I may have incorrect. In any case, in it's early inception, I think Now William was more of a concept of a band then a band and I don't know that they played any shows. All aforementioned people, myself and a couple other "Joseph boys" ended up in Eugene, either at UofO or Lane Community college. Tyler and Brian's version of the band played some house parties circa-1986/1988, during freshman/sophmore years at UofO. One of those parties I attended included them playing at least one Joy Division cover and also featured well know street character Zeus (RIP) as one of the acts on the bill. During that time Charlie McClain had moved to Medford to live with his dad, started playing bass a lot and taking lessons and that's where he hooked up with Dave Krueger (violin). When they moved to Eugene after they finished high school in 1988, the incarnation of Now William that became so popular started to gel. Both Charlie and Dave treated the band really seriously and they cycled through a few members early on, including John Kluff (sp?) on guitar, as they kept trying to find a line-up they could be happy with. Early versions of the band mixed in a lot of covers with their own songs including, the Door's "LA Woman", Bauhus "Bela Lugosi's Dead", Donavan "Season of the Witch", Ozzy Osbourn "Crazy Train", and Sir Mix-A-Lot "Hip Hop Solider". They finally recruited Max as their guitarist and Adam as their drummer. Infighting in the band eventually broke them up, and Charlie and Max grabbed a drummer they liked to form Elgin which put out a single on Grinning Idiot Records. I ended up grabbing the other pieces of the band, Dave and Adam as they formed Jasper and put out their CD on my new label Ruckus Records, in 1994. The Cherry Poppin' Daddies grabbed Adam for a bit for some of their touring needs and Jasper broke up a couple months after I put the CD out. David went on to work a lot with Mike Johnson of Snakepit and later Mark Lanegan, solo and Dinosaur Jr. fame, recording on quite a few albums. Max and the Elgin drummer split off from Charlie to form Porchfire for a brief stint then he moved to New York for a while and some of Max's work ended up on Tyler Hay's specialty CDs that he sold out of his new furniture design store BDDW (now quite successful). Charlie set his bass down to become a journeyman and didn't pick it back up until he had accomplished his objective. He still lives in Eugene and continues to be involved in various music projects. His soundcloud is here - https://soundcloud.com/charlie-mcclain </span></div>

The Milkmen reunited and played their first show in 30 years a few months back. I wasn't old enough to go see them during their original run. I did not make it to the reunion show, lived too far away at the time, and failed to ask anyone to shoot video. Did anyone shoot video of the show? I have video of them playing a song on a cable access show somewhere, will dig that up and add it to this post at some point. Henry Cooper sent me the CD represented here, not sure if it was an official release of just handed out to friends but here are 20 tracks by The Milkmen, enjoy! </div>

I think Steve gave me this a long time ago but I can't remember. This set is from January 1985, I believe this was shortly before the release of the Poor Get Poorer tape. For more Johnson Unit, go <a href="http://panicon13th.blogspot.com/2011/07/johnson-unit-1984-1987.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">here</span></a>. This one is so overdue that I'm going to pretend I thought I'd already posted it. This was the final release for Billy Jack and the only one featuring this lineup. Billy Jack continued to revolve personnel and eventually accomplished a full Wall of Voodoo in that the last version of the band featured zero original members! I love this band and Shotgun - I Love You and Chet's Lament may be Bruno's greatest love songs.</div>

I never saw Birdie Jo, may have been just after my Eugene days. Hopefully a bandmember wants to chime in with some colorful stories, I don't have any!</div>

Mimi was the very first Eugene musician I ever met way back in 1983 when she worked at Earth River Records. I still miss that place. Seemed appropriate to post something Mimi played on for the blog's 100th post, a milestone! Thanks to Mimi and Marty for allowing this post!<br />

Even later than usual, here is the third volume of our monthly series that began in July of 2015. Given the current state of things a picture of the torn down animal house seemed appropriate, not sure who originally took the picture. As usual, if you want your band off this comp, just email and your track will be promptly removed. </div>

Apparently this cd was given out at his memorial service. I don't have band names or track listings so any and all help is greatly appreciated.<br />
