I think this is the first of the Christopher Cook solo tapes and I believe it was released in 1987. Most of you are probably most familiar with Christopher from his work in St. Huck and with The Flatlanders. Not sure if Chris played solo shows or not, I don't remember any but he did release a total of four cassettes. Last I knew, Chris was the owner of a store on Willamette between 5th & 6th St. Anyone know the name of it? Same building Green Noise used to be in.

The original lineup of Oswald Five-O only released one 7" ("A Love Supreme") but they recorded much, much more than that. A few tracks surfaced in 2007 on the excellent Jealous Butcher Records release "Nothing to Prove" which you should all immediately order if you don't already own. Diane and Robert gave me tapes of these recordings 22 years ago and, being familiar with Robert's inability to ever hold onto a Snakepit tape, I figured I'd better hold onto everything just in case nobody else did. Big thanks to Diane for permitting me to post these long lost recordings.

Rest in peace Joe and Robert, you are both deeply missed.

My band's only 7", recorded in 1991 and released by spinArt in 1994. We started this band during the height of the Nirvana hype thinking it'd be funny to play acoustic pop songs while opening for garage/grunge bands. Nobody agreed with us as we only managed to play live three times in the band's history and never with the same personnel. Liking Jonathan Richman too much was another reason this band came to be. Years later I would meet Jonathan with a girl I was dating at the time and spoke to him for a couple of hours. As we left, Jonathan told me it was nice to meet me, then gave his home phone number to my girlfriend and told her to call him if she was ever in the Bay Area which forever cured me of any romantic illusions I had about Jonathan and his material. Yep, fuck you Mr. Richman! I included our horrible version of the evil twin brother song "eppin'" as a bonus track. Apologies to Bryan for massacring his song.

We recorded the "Failure... An Instructional Tape" demo on 4-track during 1994 & '95. Never managed to reform an entire band again after Rachel moved to Portland but for some reason decided to continue recording. This tape was released in 1996 and I think we sold about 10 copies.

The Guardians of American Morality seemed to be the Max's house band in the late 80's. I think they played at the Vet's Club a lot too. I remember seeing their posters all over town - "The Guardians of American Morality, putting the Count back in Country!" which I thought was pretty funny especially in light of the overall conservative nature of Eugene. I think this was the band's only release, anyone know for sure?

The Crows existed in one form or another from '85 - '89 or so. That entire period produced just this single cassette-only release. I remember the Crows being controversial amongst other bands, mostly due to their tendency to staple their flyers right over the top of other bands' on telephone poles all over Eugene. Not sure how much truth there really was to that story, the Crows rarely played live although I heard they practiced everyday. Always liked this tape, never knew any of the band members well although I do know that Sean Smith later ended up playing in Superchrist with Doug Wilkerson from Mind Garage. Anyone who knows more about the band and it's history, please comment!

Great tape from a bunch of kids who were musically skilled well beyond their years. Don't know most of the band members' last names or I'd list them, guess the cover art will do. Interviewed them once for a paper or fanzine that I don't remember the name of, don't recall much other than the girl singer was a little snotty but they were teenagers so I guess 1 out of 8 is pretty good for a snotty ratio. They later released a full-length cd that I don't have and have been unable to find a copy of. Anyone?

The 3rd and final cassette by Johnson Unit released in '86. John and Steve would go on to form Uncle Charlie while Robert continued to play in Snakepit and would eventually also join Some Velvet Sidewalk and Oswald Five-O. The title of the tape was in reference to the construction of the parking lot on 13th and Patterson that I believe forced the demolition of Lenny's Nosh Bar as well as a number of other local businesses. Easily one of the best Eugene releases in my collection. Side one was the band doing originals, side two were covers. Enjoy!

Mind Garage - S/T Demo (Cassette Only, 1987)

This 4-song tape and a couple of tracks on comp. cassettes are all that Mind Garage ever released. The band was around from '85 - '87 and played live very rarely if ever from what I recall. The only time I saw them was at a show in their practice space, there were maybe 8 or ten of us there. When the band finished they rushed us all out of the basement they practiced in, it was later explained that the people who lived in the house "would be home soon" meaning that none of us were supposed to be there. The band was Greg & Rich Babich (guitar and vocals), Vince Rivera (bass), Aaron Temple (drums) and later Doug Wilkerson (drums).

I have a few more tracks than were released, the first 7 are recorded in a studio, the last 7 are 4-track demos. There was certainly more recorded than this, anyone have additional material? By the way, song titles are all guesses other than the first four, eight and twelve.

The second Johnson Unit cassette, released in 1985. Personnel are: John O'Neil (guitar/vocals), Steve Nordby (bass/vocals) and Robert Christie (drums). Tape was recorded by Steve Nordby on his 4-track. I think this is a Eugene classic. This was the first tape I actually bought directly from a member of the band. John probably sold me most of the local tapes I've been carrying around for the last 25 years while he worked at House of Records. Some Velvet Sidewalk - From Playground 'til Now (1988, Cassette Only)

Al Larson started Some Velvet Sidewalk after he left Snakepit. When Some Velvet Sidewalk resided in Eugene, the entire band was just Al and Robert Christie although several others played on this tape as well. Many singles and full length LP's would follow this initial effort which impressed Calvin Johnson enough that the next release would be the "I Know" 7" e.p. on K Records. Big thanks to Al for allowing me to post this cassette which has been unavailable since it's initial release in 1988. Even when it came out copies were hard to come by as Al drew all the outer sleeves himself! Download while you can, Al asked me to take the link down after a couple of months so this is gone on 12/1/11!

This second Dogwater cassette was recorded in a single day in 1990 at the practice space in the house Green Noise records was in off of 6th St. The tape was intended to be the follow-up to the 10 Songs of Fun cassette released the year before by Disgraceland. Can't remember why this never came out, there was a cover drawn up and everything. I think the band may have broken up a couple of months after this was recorded. Scott or Ken, care to tell us the backstory?

Blind Lemon Pledge provided the music while you sat around working on tomorrow morning's hangover. A staple of the Vet's Club and John Henry's, Tom Heinl and friends were Eugene's very own twisted lounge act. Songs were funny, band was great. This tape was recorded by Patrick Yonally to 4-track back in '94. There was a second tape called Leftover Lemons that I'll get around to posting later but this should tide you over for awhile. The Supermarket Song is one of my all-time Eugene favorites.

Billy Jack formed in '89 or '90 when Wayne Shellabarger hit Dave Nagle's car and offered to buy Dave beer if he wouldn't report the accident. Naturally, Dave and Wayne became friends and the band started soon afterward. This is the first Billy Jack release and was recorded not long after Joe Brooks joined the band. When they started there was a drummer named Carl and a keyboardist named Bob both of whom left the band for reasons I'm not sure of. 4-track recordings were made of the original lineup but so far Wayne has yet to unearth the masters so I don't have them. Songs are hilarious and probably not something you'd want your children to hear, especially the bonus tracks I'm including that explain why the band chose the name "Waterproof Records" for their label.

This third cassette only compilation in the 13th St. series was the first released by Disgraceland Recordings. The tape came out in 1990 and was put together by Brett Morse, Patrick Yonally and Jeff Cellers. Dunghill was working on a third 13th St. compilation at the time and decided to throw in the towel. They gave Disgraceland the tapes they'd collected up to that point and wished us luck. The tape is too long but we were young and too in love with our source material to cut much of anything. As with the previous compilation posts, the Snakepit and Mike Johnson tracks have been removed in order to abide by Mike's wishes. If he ever changes his mind I'll repost a complete version of this tape.

The second and last of the Dunghill Recordings cassette compilations was released in early 1988. Even more bands than appeared on Panic on 13th, still with no place to play regularly. This tape was sort of the end of an era in Eugene music, most of the bands that were playing between 1983 and 1988 had broken up or were on the verge of it by 1989. A bunch of former high school kids who listened to the bands on this tape were now college brats and would start up a whole crop of new bands to keep the Eugene "scene" going into the mid-90's (check out 13th St. Revisited and Slaughter on 13th to hear these bands). I think it was mid-1989 by the time Max's actually started letting these types of bands play their venue. Not being all-ages, it wasn't ideal but it was better than anything we'd had before. Again, the Snakepit song has been deleted from the download due to Mike Johnson not wanting their stuff out in the digital world.

The first of several cassette-only Eugene compilations came out in 1986 courtesy of our friends at Dunghill Recordings. Many of the participants played in multiple bands on the tape and it's still surprising that there were this many bands at the time considering that there were ZERO venues for them to perform at on a regular basis. That situation didn't right itself for about 4 more years by which point every band that appears here was finished although Rawhead Rex and Uncle Charlie were pretty much Bovine Impulse and Johnson Unit with different names. The unfortunate part of this post is that I've heard from a reliable source that Mike Johnson does not want Snakepit stuff floating around online so I've excluded their tracks from the download. I wrote to Mike via Facebook to see if I could persuade him to change his mind but never heard back which I have to assume means he hasn't had a change of heart. This tape sold dozens of copies and was the start of it all!

The Black Dahlias were around for 3 years or so having been founded by Patrick Yonally, Brett Morse and myself back in 1990. Marshall, the band's drummer was added in the first couple of weeks. The original lineup only managed to record to 4-track and I'm doing a public service not posting anything I played guitar and sang on in this band because that stuff was not good. After a couple of years the band finally hit a real studio and recorded these six tracks of which only two showed up on actual releases. King of the Wheel was on a Dave Clark 5 tribute comp (I think) and Sometimes was on the Eugene cassette comp. Slaughter on 13th. This is the first post for a Patrick Yonally project and I have enough of his stuff to justify it's own separate blog.

Jealous Butcher released a split cassette of Sodajerk and Slotcar a couple of years after both bands had broken up. Logic dictates that one or more of the people in Soda Jerk must've been behind Soda Girl Records. Anyone know? I used to have a live tape too but I'm not sure what happened to it which is a real shame because I remember really liking their no keyboards cover of Berlin's "The Metro." Kpants considered Soda Jerk to be "our main competition."

The first release from Kpants on Amacha Records in 1993. A strong debut 7" from the band with perhaps the most self-destructive name in rock history. The K is silent and the spelling is a reference to the old Chris Elliott show Get a Life. Can't remember how many of them were in Pinebox before this. At least Cory and Jer I think. Kpants would later go on to release the full-length Charmless cd on Grinning Idiot as well as a final 7" and a couple of tracks on a compilation. They also recorded an unreleased follow up full-length that I'm still trying to convince Cory to put out there somewhere digitally because it's a great record (recording?). I got to know the band's members mostly after they had split up and knowing them better, I'm amazed they released anything or even practiced but I'm glad they did.

The Flatlanders were around in '87-'88 or so and managed to record and release this demo. The Flatlanders were Chris Cook (St. Huck), Ed Hutton (worked at House of Records) & Tim Arnold (St. Huck, Rawhead Rex, Cherry Poppin' Daddies). This one has stood up to the test of time quite well, surprised my cassette of this was in this good of shape! The Flatlanders also released a tape of live recordings or 4-track demos a couple of years after they broke up. I'll have to dig for that one.

The first release of live material recorded at the Calkins House. There are certainly far better notes on the tracks than on Cuneiform! More spoken word, acoustic type performances, all recorded November 20th, 1987. Still no information on who put these out, anyone know?

Turns out someone did know:

"The Caulkins House shows were organized by the BigTime Poetry Theatre. The track notes were most likely written by Curt Hopkins. I think the shows were recorded by Steve McQuiddy and Mike Winckler. I seem to remember that Steve had the tapes entered into the UO folklore collection . . . It was winter. The Caulkins House had not yet been remodeled into a restaurant, video store etc and thus was all peeling paint ceilings and holes in the walls. We swept up the dust and plaster chips, and procured some portable heaters which may or may not have had an effect on the temperature of the house. Dan ended the show with Amazing Grace. Then five or ten minutes later, everyone who was left cleaning or lingering did an amazing freezing a cappella reprise of the song."

This is the second release of live at the Calkins House material. The first was The Way of Things which I'll get around to posting soon. If you'll recall, before the Calkins House became a bunch of small offices, it was briefly a restaurant, video store and bookshop. During that brief span, it occasionally held spoken word/acoustic shows. No idea who originally put this out as there is no information beyond what appears on the cassette covers above. You might notice there is also no track listing although I've made my best guesses for the mp3's.

Another band I know pretty much nothing about, Wasted Effort was from 1982 or 1983. As far as I know, they released nothing while they were together and this 4-song tape is all that exists.

This one track is all I have by the Drills. According to the Panic on 13th Yahoo group database, the band was Buck Wallen (guitar), Chuck Clearwater (bass), Gregg Gouminiouk (vocals) and Bob Beigler (drums). I don't believe they ever released anything during their short span. This single track is recorded from KLCC's Modern Mono back in 1983 when Dave Damage was the host.

The Hoodlums were around in '84-'85 and played with the Crazy 8's a lot, too fast to be reggae, too slow to be ska. The Hoodlums neglected to release any material at the time. These recordings were for a planned LP that never materialized. I think the singer's name was Gene and he was in a band called Big Fat a few years later that I have no material by. I got the tape from a guy I knew at a record store who lived with some of the band. Please post comments if you know more!

The first cassette released by Disgraceland, early 1989. Brett Morse and I recorded these guys live in their practice space. All songs were recorded in a single afternoon, vocals were overdubbed later the same day. I couldn't recall having seen a band play this fast, Boz looked like he was headed for a heart attack at the end of each set. This was the band's only official release although they did record a never released follow-up "Lick Your Neighbor" which I will also get around to posting soon.

This first Johnson Unit tape was the first local music I bought. I like the lo-fi sound but guitarist/singer John told me that I was one of only two or three people to ever think this tape was any good. I think it was $3 well spent! This was the first release from what would later become Dunghill Recordings which I think John & Steve co-founded.

"The core of E-13, also known as Etherteen or Ether-Teen, was John Lyons (guitar/vocals), Tim Murphy (bass), and Kelp Bed (born Bill Kuder, drums). The band was founded in September 1982 with guitarist Todd Souvignier and vocalist Damon Oliver. Oliver coined the name, inspired by a Venice gang, and the idea of the "Eugene Thirteen." Oliver soon moved into a rented house with Lyons (and others) located on Eugene's East 13th street.

Situated on a main street near the university campus, their high-visibility band house was a perpetual public spectacle, health hazard and freak magnet, yet attracted surprisingly little interference from the hippieshit neighbors and police. Ecstasy was not illegal in those days, but alcohol was the primary vice. There was a steady stream of adventurous breeding stock from South Eugene High School, almost no money whatsoever, and the wildest music and people, seven days a week.

The band played frequently, at venues including W.O.W. Hall and the Erb Memorial Union, as well as numerous house parties, and appeared with groups like the Wipers, TSOL, Minutemen, the Dead Kennedys, Dirge, Final Warning, and many, many others.

In early 1983 the group made a four-track recording, engineered by Chuck Clearwater, in the basement at E.13th Street. That recording by the original line-up was never released and is lost forever as far as we know. By the summer of 1983 both Souvignier and Oliver had been sacked, and the E. 13th St. house was kaput. Lyons took control of the band, brought in Mark "Hand Dog" Heathfield on vocals, and recorded the No Mercy For Swine EP. Other derelict band houses followed, notably the Vatican, which occasionally held shows in its basement, including an early D.R.I. gig. There was also the Cottage of Cheese, home to E-13 buddies the Cheeseheads.

Etherteen went on to release the Quest for Gilligan 7" (1985), their masterpiece. They also contributed a track to the Drinking Is Great compilation with Poison Idea, Final Warning, and Lockjaw (1985). All were issued on the legendary Fatal Erection label (run by Malcolm Conover, and the late Tom "Pig Champion" Roberts of Poison Idea) and are extremely rare. These E-13 recordings have since cropped up on various bootleg compilations.

By 1986 or '87 Lyons and Murphy had formed Osgood Slaughter, with Bruno Bersanti from Moose Lodge on vocals. The group moved to San Francisco, and did a record for Fatal Erection. Lyons eventually wound up in New York, where he led the Barnyard Playboys (1995-2005) and most recently, Peter and the Pansexuals. Murphy is also now in NY, where he works alongside Lyons. Kelp Bed is reportedly in San Francisco playing with Davo "Shredder" Levin. Souvignier is now in New Orleans, where he performs with SOUTHERN SEXUAL. Heathfield was last seen in San Francisco, but hasn't been heard from in years. "

E-13, the band, the legend! Most anyone who would have an interest in this blog has a funny story or two to share about these guys, I encourage you to do so in the comments. I think this is everything that was officially released but Malcolm would be the final word on that since he put all this stuff out in the first place. Purchased in 1984, this is a demo of amazing synth punk. Hilarious lyrics and a band that can really play. Years after this came out, John O'Neil told me he'd hung out with lead singer Bruno while he smashed copies of the tape in his garage with a hammer. Too bad, because there weren't many to go around, my copy was #86 of 100. Hard to pick a favorite here because I like them all so much but Vaporize Me, Atomize Me and New World Babies might be the standouts. As a bonus, I've included three tracks that didn't appear on the New World Babies tape, as far as I know this is the band's complete output. I only got to see them play once, it was at a high school dance where they had the plug pulled on them after 10 minutes. "It appears that we're done for the evening..." Bruno said, barely started on his two liter bottle of wine cooler sitting prominently on his synth before a room of teenagers. He later went on to sing in Osgood Slaughter and Billy Jack. At least one or two of these guys were also in E-13 at the time. I don't think a year has passed in the last 26 that I didn't listen to this at least a couple of times.

Only saw The Resistance once, at the EMU dining hall in early 1985. All I remember is the singer Gary wearing a beret and being annoyed that the crowd just sat there and didn't react at all. You'd think the guy had never played a show in Eugene before. This was the band's only official release although I heard they recorded a full-length too. I believe they broke up quickly and were only around for a few months. Anyone know more? I think this is a nice post-punk effort.

This must be the strangest of the Eugene tapes I own. In the past, I've described the Carrion Commandos as a band one might listen to while committing homicide. Creepy stuff, this was originally released in 1983 and I'm told the original packaging included a few strands of band members' pubic hair. I bought my copy off a punk rock guy named Tom who happened to have the tape with him when the subject came up. Thankfully, the copy I bought didn't include everything the tape originally came with. Lead singer Vsar 23 used to live in the basement apartment of the house I lived in while I went to college. Once, my downstairs neighbor went down to the basement to complain about the noise level and Vsar growled at her like a dog until she freaked out and left. I guess that sort of mindset explains much of what is going on here although nothing could explain the combination of drugs they must have been on to think doing a parody of I Eat Cannibal was a good idea.

This is the earliest thing I have, the only (?) 7" from Attack and the Fun. Released in 1980, all I know about them is that Steve Nordby said he used to see these guys at the EMU beer garden. They have a myspace page that has a couple of tracks that aren't on this single if you'd like to hear more.
