Now William was around from '89 to '92 or so, my memory is a little fuzzy. Can't remember anyone else ever sounding like these guys and the first time I met Charlie and David I think they were wearing overalls which helped sell it even more. Below is a collection of unreleased 4-track and live demos, I believe it's everything they recorded prior to their cd. If anyone knows a detailed history of the band, please write it in the comments below. Enjoy!

Undertakers, The - Time Machine 7" + bonus tracks ('92 Tombstone Records)

Kevin Shapen - Guitar
Jason Hill - Vocals
Pat Yonally - Organ
Brett Morse - Bass
Todd Kinner - Drums

The Undertakers were around for a year or two in the early 90's. I saw them a few times, always a fun show even if I was nearly deaf for 2 days after standing too close while watching them at Max's once. I remember thinking they must have super glued Pat's fingers to his keyboard as almost every other part of his body was in motion while the band played. The Undertakers recorded way more than they ever released some of which is included here. They recorded a still unreleased full-length that may eventually appear on this blog once Brett gets me the DAT and I find a way to bump it to CD-R. Enjoy!

Uncle Charlie (1988-1990)

John O'Neil - Guitar/Vocals
Steve Nordby - Bass
Adam Glogauer - Drums

The first Uncle Charlie cassette, released in 1988 by Dunghill. This is a Eugene classic with a whole bunch of should-have-been-hits. After Johnson Unit split up, John and Steve took some time then recruited youngster Adam to play drums in their new band. This was a really fun time in Eugene with Snakepit, Uncle Charlie, Rawhead Rex and Some Velvet Sidewalk all playing basement shows every month or two if you were paying attention. Enjoy!

John O'Neil - Guitar/Vocals
Steve Nordby - Bass
Adam Glogauer - Drums
Mike Stinett - Sax

The second and final cassette by Uncle Charlie was released by Dunghill in '89 shortly after the band had split up. Mike had joined the band on sax by the time these recordings were made. I think by this point John was pretty sick of Eugene and he moved to Boise not too long after this came out. Having moved out of Eugene myself some 16 years ago I get it but I still missed the yearly release by some band fronted by John. The last band I knew about that he was in was El Dopamine, not sure if they're still playing or not. John?

"Not Any More" was a rush job because John was getting married and heading to Boise. We had a huge backlog of material. The previous Uncle Charlie release, "Your Friend," was recorded over about six months, but this was done in a couple of weeks. It's a fine set of songs.

I told John he needed to redo the "Poison Mountain" vocals right after he finished, but Mike told me I was wrong. He was right.

When I started mixing, I noticed problems in my engineering (distortion in the cymbals is the biggest thing that bugs me) and would have re-recorded if John was still in town.

I outsourced tape duplication and they did a terrible job. It bugged me to have to explain the reason for reference tones. The second time, the levels were OK but their machines were off-speed, so original cassettes play about 1/2 step sharp on a machine running at the correct speed.

My fav track is Skydiver. There is a video of this edited from stolen clips in the middle of the night at a local TV station...

"March Ninth" was a musical exploration that I was unsure of when coming up with the bass part. While mixing, John mailed me (pre email) to make the mix as expansive as possible.

"Stupid Town" is about Sutherlin, Oregon. A fav JPO song.

"Nostalgia" is an outtake from the "Your Friend" sessions (note how the drums sound so much better). We just were goofing around and liked it.

"Wedding Train" - the fantastic Snakepit song redone by us. I did the guitar solo. Damn I couldn't get it right. Sorry Al.

"Capital Gains" - I loved playing this.

"Facing Up" - A Johnson Unit song with too much behind it to explain here. An acoustic version to make sure we got it out.

Christopher Cook (1987-1990)

I think this is the first of the Christopher Cook solo tapes and I believe it was released in 1987. Most of you are probably most familiar with Christopher from his work in St. Huck and with The Flatlanders. Not sure if Chris played solo shows or not, I don't remember any but he did release a total of four cassettes. Last I knew, Chris was the owner of a store on Willamette between 5th & 6th St. Anyone know the name of it? Same building Green Noise used to be in.

bunny summer - 7" & Cassette (1991 & 1996)

Rachel Blumberg - drums, vocals
Adam Glogauer - guitar, bass, vocals
Sean Reid - guitar, vocals
Jeff Cellers - vocals

My band's only 7", recorded in 1991 and released by spinArt in 1994. We started this band during the height of the Nirvana hype thinking it'd be funny to play acoustic pop songs while opening for garage/grunge bands. Nobody agreed with us as we only managed to play live three times in the band's history and never with the same personnel. Liking Jonathan Richman too much was another reason this band came to be. Years later I would meet Jonathan with a girl I was dating at the time and spoke to him for a couple of hours. As we left, Jonathan told me it was nice to meet me, then gave his home phone number to my girlfriend and told her to call him if she was ever in the Bay Area which forever cured me of any romantic illusions I had about Jonathan and his material. Yep, fuck you Mr. Richman! I included our horrible version of the evil twin brother song "eppin'" as a bonus track. Apologies to Bryan for massacring his song.

1. the one about las vegas
2. the one about holly

We recorded the "Failure... An Instructional Tape" demo on 4-track during 1994 & '95. Never managed to reform an entire band again after Rachel moved to Portland but for some reason decided to continue recording. This tape was released in 1996 and I think we sold about 10 copies.

3. cereal
4. Yeah, I've Heard That One Before Too

Guardians of American Morality - (1987-1993?)

Molly Belle - Vocals
Stacey Belle - Bass
Jerome Berryhill - Guitar
Mark O. Howerton - Vocals
Randy "Red" Longneck - Drums and backing vocals
Johnny Mustang (aka Barley) - Guitar and vocals

The Guardians of American Morality seemed to be the Max's house band in the late 80's. I think they played at the Vet's Club a lot too. I remember seeing their posters all over town - "The Guardians of American Morality, putting the Count back in Country!" which I thought was pretty funny especially in light of the overall conservative nature of Eugene. I think this was the band's only release, anyone know for sure?

Jerome Berryhill - Guitar
Larry Blum - Steel Guitar
Pete Christie - Bass (Lead Vocal on Cold Blue Steel)
Michael Miller - Drums

I think most of us who would have an interest in this blog are well aware of who the Guardians were and also how hilarious. Jerome was kind enough to send me this two track cassette which contains no live material despite the title. Not sure if these were ever actually released or if it was just a tape passed amongst friends but the tracks are well recorded and this would have been a fine follow-up to the debut e.p. Jerome also sent along the poster above which just about anyone who was around at the time ought to remember. My Guardians posts truly would never have been complete without the poster so I'd like to send a huge THANK YOU to Jerome for that and the cassette. Be sure to drink heavily while you listen to these tracks!

The Crows - S/T (Cassette Only, 1988)

Derek Potts - Vocals, Percussion
Tod White - Guitar
Sean Smith - Guitar, Vocals
Bill Palmer - Bass
Julian Porter - Vocals, Percussion

The Crows existed in one form or another from '85 - '89 or so. That entire period produced just this single cassette-only release. I remember the Crows being controversial amongst other bands, mostly due to their tendency to staple their flyers right over the top of other bands' on telephone poles all over Eugene. Not sure how much truth there really was to that story, the Crows rarely played live although I heard they practiced everyday. Always liked this tape, never knew any of the band members well although I do know that Sean Smith later ended up playing in Superchrist with Doug Wilkerson from Mind Garage. Anyone who knows more about the band and it's history, please comment!
