Clear My Name (1985-87)

Clear My Name: Alix Hague - Voice Jeff Langston - Bass Scott McLean - Drums Casey Scholz- Guitar

Here is the story of Clear My Name, huge thanks to Scott McLean for the bio that follows and to Mary Kroeker who shot and provided the photos:

In, on, near or somewhere around December of 1985 I found myself in Alix's mom's basement for the first time with Alix, Casey and Jeff. In that moment I had no idea that for the next 16 months we would practically live together in that basement, coming up occasionally for fresh air, food, or maybe school.
Alix and I had tried out a few other guitar and bass players for whatever our new band was going to be but everyone was too something. Too hardcore. Too ska. Too free jazz freak out. Casey and Jeff arrived via a recommendation by Pete Shanahan who had played with them in their first band, The Skeptics. And, as it turned out, Casey was (and still is) the younger brother of Nat who played bass in my first band, The Difference. I have no idea what we played that night but we agreed it worked well and declared ourselves a band. And then there we were, a nameless band of four self taught kids [Alix (18), Scott (17), Casey (16) and Jeff (15)] throwing off our cover band past and hell bent on playing original music that we hadn't yet written. By March of 1986 we had five original songs and booked a weekend at Trey Gunn's Subliminal Studios to record the 'Death of the Avant Garde' EP. Our studio naïveté was well on show that weekend but it reached its apex at the end of the session when we learned that not only did we owe for the two day hourly rates but also for the master tape of our recording. We didn't have, and couldn't get, the money to buy the master so Trey dubbed a copy onto a cassette, telling me that he'd hold the master for a month before erasing it to reuse. I never went back. It's a decision I have regretted ever since. From that one cassette ten cassettes were dubbed. I kept one and the rest went to the holy grail local cassettes case at the House of Records. Then the original was eaten by a glutton of a tape deck that I knew couldn't be trusted but did anyway. Which meant the next ten copies were dubbed off my copy from the first batch of dubs. And you know the story of generation loss so we'll leave it at that. It took 34 years to track down a copy from the first generation of dubs (Thank you Mary!). And now you can listen to it here! After that session everything becomes a swirling blur of a year. We started playing out on a regular basis as we kept writing, recording our new songs on the trusted Fostex X-15 4-track for what I'd planned on being a full length album. All told we committed five original songs to tape, one re-record of a track from Death of the Avant Garde and two covers. And now you can listen to them here! The only other recording known to exist is from August of 1986. It was recorded in the practice basement by our friend Mary (Thanks again, Mary!). It has the muffled echo of a basement recording but is interesting because it contains the three songs that would have flushed out the full length album but were never recorded (and also for a one minute bashing instrumental take of The Who's "Real Me"). And now you can listen to it here! And then we were done. Questions about the where's and when's and why's and how's of the end of Clear My Name are met with a collective shrug. It just happened. There was no epic explosion. No throwing of fists or guitars. No names called. No fingers pointed. It was simply time. We all just wandered off one day in different directions and kept on wandering. Thanks for listening and thanks for being a part of our memories from an amazing, wonderful time in Eugene, OR. Scott I (and the band) want to thank Jeff for gently reminding me about every two years that we really should get this project done and shared. He is a very patient man. Thank you, Jeff.

Cheezy Trollz - We Dined For Your Sins (CD, 2005 Obscurica)

Damon Votour - Everything Audible?

Ripping off the notes from discogs.com which seems only fair as they've lifted dozens of pictures from this blog. Although this was recorded in Portland, I believe Cheezy Trollz got their start in Eugene so I say it qualifies.

"The CD you're listening to is the result of bored kids living in Oregon. The weather was bad and there was nothing to do. But there was cheap beer and LSD was plentiful. What you hear is the sound of soggy clothes, bad acid, and PBR. It was recorded on a 4-track in southeast Portland between 1992 and 2000 and mixed in San Francisco in 2003 off 2nd and third generation tapes so the sound quality is poor at times, but hey so are we. If you want something slick, generic, and commercial, you can always buy a Fugazi or Sleater-Kinney release. This Cheezy Trollz release is limited to 250 copies and won't be released in this fashion again. Great care has been given to assure that all 250 packages are different hand-colored and numbered - all filled with different stuff, most of it found on the street. The one cosistency is all CD's will have screen printed canvas covers, come in a plastic bag with a box of macaroni and cheeze, a condom, a spork, a breath mint, and a little pamphlet with cartoons and lyrics. Like the one you are reading right now, Jackass. Bon Appetite. And remember... WE DINED FOR YOUR SINS."

Limited Edition of 250 hand-numbered copies. (Good luck finding one!)
Packaged in a ziploc bag with a 32 page comic book and other assorted items such as photos, macaroni and cheese, and stuff found on the ground.

The Big I Am - Unreleased Demo (?) (1990 or 1991)

Jim Kelso - Vocals
Sam Oberholtzer - Bass
Scott van Dusen - Guitar
Scott Shively - Drums

I don't remember if this demo was actually released or not. I didn't know these guys although I did seem them play at Max's a couple of times. I thought their track on the Pollen Count tape was one of the standouts. I have a vague recollection of seeing a Big I Am tape at House of Records but it's been 25 years so hazy at best. Fortunately, former vocalist Jim Kelso found out about the blog and was kind enough to send this in. I will email him for track names and a band history because I don't have any of that information.  Here are 12 demo tracks plus the Colt 45 track from Pollen Count:

Elgin (1993)

Charlie McClain - Bass/Vocals

Elgin was Charlie's post-Now William band. I never saw them, I think I moved out of Eugene not long after they formed.  Someone want to help me out with personnel and history? Grinning Idiot released their lone 7" in 1993 and here it is:

Chuck Clearwater

Chuck Clearwater (RIP)

I didn't know Chuck Clearwater, he played music in Eugene a couple of years before I started buying and going to see local bands. I assume he moved out of Eugene by 1985 otherwise I would probably have bought something he played on at Earth River or House of Records. I first heard him play in 1983 when I heard The Drills on KLCC's Modern Mono. I've heard that The Drills released a couple of tapes but I've never been able to find anyone that has copies and Facebook messages to the band's former singer have never been replied to. In addition to The Drills, Chuck was also in J. Gallows & the Executioners, Punishment Farm and probably a few more that I don't know about. I had no idea he'd ever released solo cassettes until a kind soul emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in copies. Based on these tapes a strong case can be made for Chuck being one of the best musicians to ever play in Eugene. He seemed to play damn near everything and did it all well. I wish I could have met and known him.

Fate vs. Free Will Turn Signals (1986-91)

Keven Dow - Guitar, Sound Engineering
Bruce Nealley - Drums
Xeres (aka Robert Shepard) - Saxophone, Toy Instruments
Dwan Shepard - Bass, Vocals, Trombone
Lewis Schroeder - Tape Loops
Dave Schwebke - Drums

Never got to see Fate vs Free Will Turn Signals, actually never even heard of them until I got an email from Robert Shepard with links to all the recordings posted here. I've had these for awhile now and should have posted them sooner, I've been digesting these over a period of time and they are now among my favorite Eugene recordings. Driving home late at night listening to these makes me feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie, nervous with a sense of impending doom. I mean that as a compliment to the band. Please check these out! Thank you to walking Eugene music history encyclopedia Joe Lewis for the personnel info!

Kpants (1992-1995)

Cory Hamilton - Vocals
Mike Healy - Bass
Jeremy Hainline - Guitar
Austin Swartout - Drums

I think Kpants started as a result of the Pollen Count comp. cassette that Mike Healy put out back in 1992. Pinebox, Cory & Jer's band prior to Kpants appeared on the tape. Pinebox broke up not too long after that and Mike became the bassist and I don't know how they met Austin.  Anyway, the stuff posted below is the complete Kpants discography, everything they ever recorded, at least in a studio, never occurred to me to ask Mike if they ever 4-tracked anything. Still some research to do here.

SINGLES, COMP TRACKS, UNRELEASED & LIVE

1. Not Kind (from 1st 7" of the same name)
2. At the Urinal (from 1st 7" Not Kind)

3. Crash (Long Version, Previously Unreleased)
4. Erie (Previously Unreleased)

5. Crash (originally appeared on I-5 Killers Vol. 3)

6. Love (from 2nd and last single of the same name)
7. Hospital (from 2nd and last single Love)

8. Bookworm (Live, originally appeared on one of the "Night at the X-Ray" cassette comps)

9. My Strong Back Legs (originally appeared on the Jealous Butcher comp. Nailed to the Stars)
10. Vampire Girl (originally appeared on the Jealous Butcher comp. Nailed to the Stars)
Adam Glogauer plays drums on #9 & #10

Cory Hamilton - Vocals
Mike Healy - Bass
Jeremy Hainline - Guitar
Austin - Drums

The first cd came to us courtesy of Grinning Idiot Records back in 1994. This release followed the first single "Not Kind" from 1993.

CHARMLESS

1. Light Sprinkle
2. Bookworm
3. Forehead
4. She's Got You
5. Sonic Ripoff
6. Lunchpale
7. Pie Song
8. Stare Off
9. Ants
10. Should We Cut It?
11. Best Kissers
12. Love Theme From Kpants

Cory Hamilton - Vocals
Mike Healy - Bass
Jeremy Hainline - Guitar
Jivan Valpey - Drums

Austin had left the band by this point and Kpants were never really able to permanently settle on another drummer. Jivan was in the band at this point, not sure how long he was around for. Adam Glogauer played a few shows with them and I know there was one other drummer who quit the band citing Cory's lack of professionalism for eating a plate of spaghetti on stage during the set. If the guy had a problem with behavior like that he was clearly in the wrong band. I recall Cory being late to the band's last show because he was cleaning his bathroom.

SMILE AND NOD ACCORDINGLY (UNRELEASED ALBUM)

1.  Ask Any Moron
2. Friendly Approach
3. The Lights Turned Down Low
4. Succor's Gesture
5. The Charmer
6. Just Play Along
7. Don't Do the Spider (originally released on the Crave Dog Records "Can't Stand the Smell cd comp.)
8. I'm In Your Shirt
9. Against Me
10. Wrist Rocket
11. Hooray For Everything

I'll add additional photos and possibly some video and live material too depending on what I can get the band to cough up.

Snakepit (1984-1990)

Al Larson - Guitar/Vocals
Mike Johnson - Guitar/Vocals
Robert Christie (RIP) - Drums/Vocals
Joe Argast - Bass/Vocals
Laura McDougall - Bass on "Tonight's the Night"

Barely know where to start with this one. Snakepit were one of Eugene's finest bands. John O'Neil talked me into forking over $3.00 to purchase this back in '85 never having heard the band. This tape, along with the first two Johnson Unit tapes and the lone Moose Lodge cassette began my obsession with obtaining every Eugene demo possible. To this day, I don't understand how Snakepit failed to become absolutely huge. The music speaks for itself and I'm eternally grateful to Mike Johnson for allowing me to share this with you.

Snakepit - Soul Like a Goat (1985)

1. Wedding Train
2. Rachel
3. You Tell Me
4. A Short Narrative
5. Me & Mine
6. Sunrise
7. All Nerves
8. Still Haunts Me
9. Wishing Well
10. Waiting For You
11. Tonight's the Night (Live)
12. Art Song (bonus track)

Mike Johnson - Guitar/Vocals
Laura McDougall - Bass
Robert Christie - Drums/Vocals

This second cassette only release came out in '87 and was engineered by Ron Synovitz who was also kind enough to re-master it! This is the first time the recording has been available here and it's long overdue. Billy Karren was on the verge of joining the band and actually played on some of the live material that filled out the side but the studio tracks are just Mike, Robert & Laura. Hopefully I can get Ron to share some stories about this recording, will update accordingly.

Mike Johnson - Guitar/Vocals

Laura McDougall - Bass
Robert Christie - Drums/Vocals

At long last, here is the first Snakepit single! The band had previously released two cassettes (Soul Like a Goat, already posted on this blog and From Vegas to Memphis, coming soon) but his was the first time the band had committed anything to vinyl. The tracks were recorded in '88 at Smegma in Portland with Mike Lastra. I heard many years ago that they recorded 7 tracks at the session but the 4 posted here are all I have. If anyone can confirm that additional tracks were recorded please email me, especially if you have the songs! Don't feel like I need to type much about this record, it speaks for itself and you should have already clicked the download link before you even read this far.

Mike Johnson - Guitar/Bass/Vocals
Laura McDougall - Bass
Robert Christie - Drums/Vocals

This was the final release by Snakepit although it was not the last material they recorded. Released in 1990 by Dunghill I can't even remember if the band was still playing live at the time with Joe Preston on bass. The front cover is an ominous photo of Robert walking in his burned down apartment at 951 Patterson. The night the place burned Snakepit was supposed to be playing a show at the EMU Dining Hall, it would have been the first time they'd played Eugene in months. The tracks on this post were all recorded at Gung Ho and it's strange to hear the band in the kind of clarity that Gung Ho provides. I wish they'd recorded many many albums but after this there was only the unreleased Eeyore.

 Snakepit - Waste 7" + Bonus Tracks (1990)

1. Waste
2. Million
3. Say It's So (Originally appeared on 13th St. Revisited cassette comp)
4. Rot (Unreleased)
5. Searching For a Five (Unreleased)
6. Finger In Judgement (Unreleased)
7. Lovers Understand (Unreleased, Robert Sings!)

Mike Johnson - Vocals, Guitar, Bass (?)
Robert Christie - Drums, Vocals

This unreleased album was the last studio stuff Snakepit recorded. I believe this was all done at Gung-Ho Studios in 1989 and I'm not sure if Laura was still around to play bass on these tracks, I think it was just Mike and Robert by this point. Not much to say, this should have come out over 20 years ago but for a variety of reasons, that never happened. When I asked Mike's permission to post this, he said sure although he couldn't "imagine that anyone would want to hear it." Please let him know he was wrong about that in the comments. Many of these songs later appeared in different form on Mike's solo albums, I guess that makes this sort of like Snakepit's V.U. or Another View?

Snakepit - Eeyore (Unreleased '89)

1. Home Ground

2. Impatient & Unwilling
3. You're Alive
4. Separation
5. Giving Up on Time

The Batcows (1988-1989)

Patrick Yonally - Guitar/Vocals
Brent Karnes - Bass/Vocals
Erinn Fralich - Drums
Joe McCargar - Guitar/Vocals

The Batcows were around in the late 80's for a little over a year, they relocated to Eugene from Grants Pass when the entire band enrolled at the U of O. My first not-so-great band The Exploding Cats used to play regularly with these guys at house parties all over campus. I recorded this demo on a 4-track in the living room of Patrick's apartment. I think it sounds pretty good considering that towards the end Joe was so drunk we had to lean him against a wall to play his parts.  Favorite part was that Patrick had wired headphones into a football helmet and the vocals were all performed with that on. I think this is all that has survived, there were a few additional songs recorded but the master is long gone. The tape was eventually released by Patrick about a year after the band broke up but I don't have the cover art. Patrick?
