Los Xplorers Live! Several shows!

Henry Cooper - Guitar
John Barley - Guitar
Fred Kellogg - Bass
Marlin Reiber - Drums
Frank Poloney - Sax

Henry Cooper shared these files with me years ago and given that John Barley has just passed away it feels like it's finally time to share them. There is quite a lot of material here and I didn't even name the tracks but it felt like I should get this out now rather than in a year.

Saint Huck - Sound Over Sound (Unreleased? 1986)

Steve Perry - Guitar/Vocals
Chris Cook - Accordion
Dan Schmid - Bass
Tim Arnold - Drums

This is another recording that should have been posted years ago because Tim sent it to me years ago. At long last here is the unreleased (?) e.p. by Saint Huck recorded back in 1986. Two of the tracks did appear on the Panic On 13th compilation cassette shortly after they were recorded but as far as I know nothing else ever saw the light of day. No idea why. Dan? Tim? Steve? Chris? I remember seeing them at the W.O.W. hall in 1985 or so when Dave Allen was the full time singer (I think?). As always, please leave any background/historical details in the comments and maybe in five to ten years I'll update the post. As everyone knows, Steve, Dan & Tim continued on together in the Cherry Poppin' Daddies just three years later. The two bonus tracks are sourced from a cassette John O'Neil made for me in 1987. I've heard there are other tracks that were recorded but I've never been in possession of them. Anyone?

Sound Over Sound (1986)
1. Pelican
2. Roseland
3. Dream Tigers
4. Chrysalis
5. Icon
6. Both
7. Can't Stop The Rain
8. Departure
9. Bonus Track, Title Unknown
10. Sleepwalker (?), Actual Title Unknown

A Few Chairs (1984-89)

Mimi Raiter - Guitar/Vocals
Marty Schwarzbauer - Bass/Vocals
Aaron Temple - Drums

A Few Chairs were around in the mid-80's and re-emerged as Skeleton Closet at some point in the 90's too. This tape was officially released but I don't have a copy anymore and I don't think the cover is going to turn up anytime soon so I'm going with what I've got. Not having the cover also means I don't know many of the song titles, Mimi or Marty if you want to help out please do! I think this is from 1986. Got most of the track names, thanks Hans!

A Few Chairs - S/T (1986)

01 - Boys
02 - Nasty Boys
03 - Someone Else
04 - Nuclear Attack
05 - I Wonder Whatever Became of...

Live at Satyricon, December 1988

Panic on 13th Reunion Show, W.O.W. Hall, 10/27/2006
As many of you know, there was an attempt at a Eugene documentary in 2005-06 that was abandoned for reasons I was never quite clear on. One positive thing that came out of all of it was the reunion show.  I was given a pile of material collected for the project after it was abandoned and the blog was born in 2011. I procrastinate.

Zombie Toolshed (Cassette Only, 1988)

Thank you to whoever sent me these tracks a year or two ago. The cover took much longer to track down, thank you Ryan M.!!  This is another one that should have been up years ago but my copy was lost in a box years ago during one of many moves. My first band played with Zombie Toolshed once and they were much better than us which isn't really setting the bar high. What I mean to say is that Zombie Toolshed were a fun punk rock band, I don't know a lot about their history but I don't think they were around long, maybe a year or two?  All the other particulars are in the photos above, someone at the time should have released this as a full blown LP, it sounds great!

Clear My Name (1985-87)

Clear My Name: Alix Hague - Voice Jeff Langston - Bass Scott McLean - Drums Casey Scholz- Guitar

Here is the story of Clear My Name, huge thanks to Scott McLean for the bio that follows and to Mary Kroeker who shot and provided the photos:

In, on, near or somewhere around December of 1985 I found myself in Alix's mom's basement for the first time with Alix, Casey and Jeff. In that moment I had no idea that for the next 16 months we would practically live together in that basement, coming up occasionally for fresh air, food, or maybe school.
Alix and I had tried out a few other guitar and bass players for whatever our new band was going to be but everyone was too something. Too hardcore. Too ska. Too free jazz freak out. Casey and Jeff arrived via a recommendation by Pete Shanahan who had played with them in their first band, The Skeptics. And, as it turned out, Casey was (and still is) the younger brother of Nat who played bass in my first band, The Difference. I have no idea what we played that night but we agreed it worked well and declared ourselves a band. And then there we were, a nameless band of four self taught kids [Alix (18), Scott (17), Casey (16) and Jeff (15)] throwing off our cover band past and hell bent on playing original music that we hadn't yet written. By March of 1986 we had five original songs and booked a weekend at Trey Gunn's Subliminal Studios to record the 'Death of the Avant Garde' EP. Our studio naïveté was well on show that weekend but it reached its apex at the end of the session when we learned that not only did we owe for the two day hourly rates but also for the master tape of our recording. We didn't have, and couldn't get, the money to buy the master so Trey dubbed a copy onto a cassette, telling me that he'd hold the master for a month before erasing it to reuse. I never went back. It's a decision I have regretted ever since. From that one cassette ten cassettes were dubbed. I kept one and the rest went to the holy grail local cassettes case at the House of Records. Then the original was eaten by a glutton of a tape deck that I knew couldn't be trusted but did anyway. Which meant the next ten copies were dubbed off my copy from the first batch of dubs. And you know the story of generation loss so we'll leave it at that. It took 34 years to track down a copy from the first generation of dubs (Thank you Mary!). And now you can listen to it here! After that session everything becomes a swirling blur of a year. We started playing out on a regular basis as we kept writing, recording our new songs on the trusted Fostex X-15 4-track for what I'd planned on being a full length album. All told we committed five original songs to tape, one re-record of a track from Death of the Avant Garde and two covers. And now you can listen to them here! The only other recording known to exist is from August of 1986. It was recorded in the practice basement by our friend Mary (Thanks again, Mary!). It has the muffled echo of a basement recording but is interesting because it contains the three songs that would have flushed out the full length album but were never recorded (and also for a one minute bashing instrumental take of The Who's "Real Me"). And now you can listen to it here! And then we were done. Questions about the where's and when's and why's and how's of the end of Clear My Name are met with a collective shrug. It just happened. There was no epic explosion. No throwing of fists or guitars. No names called. No fingers pointed. It was simply time. We all just wandered off one day in different directions and kept on wandering. Thanks for listening and thanks for being a part of our memories from an amazing, wonderful time in Eugene, OR. Scott I (and the band) want to thank Jeff for gently reminding me about every two years that we really should get this project done and shared. He is a very patient man. Thank you, Jeff.

Mind Garage (aka Delta Ponds) "In the Garden" (1987?)

Greg Babich (RIP) - Guitar
Rich Babich (RIP) - Vocals
Vince Rivera - Bass
Aaron Temple - Drums

Special thanks to Paula Wang for submitting the photos via our Facebook page as well as the tracks themselves, the only shots to have materialized of Mind Garage in the seven years I've been doing this. Mind Garage played rarely and released music even less often than that. At least half of these tracks were released as a Delta Ponds cassette. I had the artwork but that was three hard drive crashes ago so we're lucky to still have this, the unreleased Mind Garage studio album!

The Ghosts of 13th St: Killed By Apathy Vol. 3

Even later than usual, here is the third volume of our monthly series that began in July of 2015. Given the current state of things a picture of the torn down animal house seemed appropriate, not sure who originally took the picture. George Lane - The Snoozefest (Unreleased, 1989)

Greg Sutherland - Vocals
John O'Neil - Drums, Guitar
Mike Johnson - Drums, Guitar
Adam Glogauer - Drums
Christopher Cook - ??
Steve Nordby - Bass?

Another in the seemingly endless number of Eugene recordings that went unreleased at least as far as I know. I think Greg Sutherland was the driving force behind the band. I believe they played live a few times and that Steve Nordby engineered the tape. You now know as much as I do and the list of personnel listed above is guesswork and almost surely incomplete. Enjoy the Snoozefest!

Chuck Clearwater

Chuck Clearwater (RIP)

I didn't know Chuck Clearwater, he played music in Eugene a couple of years before I started buying and going to see local bands. I assume he moved out of Eugene by 1985 otherwise I would probably have bought something he played on at Earth River or House of Records. I first heard him play in 1983 when I heard The Drills on KLCC's Modern Mono. I've heard that The Drills released a couple of tapes but I've never been able to find anyone that has copies and Facebook messages to the band's former singer have never been replied to. In addition to The Drills, Chuck was also in J. Gallows & the Executioners, Punishment Farm and probably a few more that I don't know about. I had no idea he'd ever released solo cassettes until a kind soul emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in copies. Based on these tapes a strong case can be made for Chuck being one of the best musicians to ever play in Eugene. He seemed to play damn near everything and did it all well. I wish I could have met and known him.

Keven Dow - Guitar, Sound Engineering
Bruce Nealley - Drums
Xeres (aka Robert Shepard) - Saxophone, Toy Instruments
Dwan Shepard - Bass, Vocals, Trombone
Lewis Schroeder - Tape Loops
Dave Schwebke - Drums

Never got to see Fate vs Free Will Turn Signals, actually never even heard of them until I got an email from Robert Shepard with links to all the recordings posted here. I've had these for awhile now and should have posted them sooner, I've been digesting these over a period of time and they are now among my favorite Eugene recordings. Driving home late at night listening to these makes me feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie, nervous with a sense of impending doom. I mean that as a compliment to the band. Please check these out! Thank you to walking Eugene music history encyclopedia Joe Lewis for the personnel info!

Oswald Five-O (1989-1996)

Robert Christie (RIP) - Guitar & Vocals
Diane Beck (now Rios) - Bass & Vocals
Gary Schartz - Guitar
Joe Brooks (RIP) - Drums

The original lineup of Oswald Five-O only released one 7" ("A Love Supreme") but they recorded much, much more than that. A few tracks surfaced in 2006 on the excellent Jealous Butcher Records release "Nothing to Prove" which you should all immediately order if you don't already own. Diane and Robert gave me tapes of these recordings 22 years ago and, being familiar with Robert's inability to ever hold onto a Snakepit tape, I figured I'd better hold onto everything just in case nobody else did. Big thanks to Diane for permitting me to post these long lost recordings.

Rest in peace Joe and Robert, you are both deeply missed.
