Now William - S/T cd 1992

Charlie McClain - Bass/Vocals
Max Striplin - Guitar
David Krueger - Violin/Mandolin/Vocals
Adam Glogauer - Drums

A great history of the band from our comments section on a past Now William post:

The first incarnation of Now William formed in Joseph, Oregon, likely around 1984-85, when I was away for a year as an exchange student. It seems that the name in part came from a song the Benji Heiney sang super imposed over Wang Chung's "Fun Tonight".... Hey Now, Hey Now William. I'm guessing at the time that Now William was Benji Heiney, Tyler Hays, Brian Coughlan and Charlie McClain (and possibly Andrew Crenshaw). I'll have to ask all of them for their recollections. They'll likely correct me all over the place, but me putting this up here forces them to set the record straight on anything I may have incorrect. In any case, in it's early inception, I think Now William was more of a concept of a band then a band and I don't know that they played any shows. All aforementioned people, myself and a couple other "Joseph boys" ended up in Eugene, either at UofO or Lane Community college. Tyler and Brian's version of the band played some house parties circa-1986/1988, during freshman/sophmore years at UofO. One of those parties I attended included them playing at least one Joy Division cover and also featured well know street character Zeus (RIP) as one of the acts on the bill. During that time Charlie McClain had moved to Medford to live with his dad, started playing bass a lot and taking lessons and that's where he hooked up with Dave Krueger (violin). When they moved to Eugene after they finished high school in 1988, the incarnation of Now William that became so popular started to gel. Both Charlie and Dave treated the band really seriously and they cycled through a few members early on, including John Kluff (sp?) on guitar, as they kept trying to find a line-up they could be happy with. Early versions of the band mixed in a lot of covers with their own songs including, the Door's "LA Woman", Bauhus "Bela Lugosi's Dead", Donavan "Season of the Witch", Ozzy Osbourn "Crazy Train", and Sir Mix-A-Lot "Hip Hop Solider". They finally recruited Max as their guitarist and Adam as their drummer. Infighting in the band eventually broke them up, and Charlie and Max grabbed a drummer they liked to form Elgin which put out a single on Grinning Idiot Records. I ended up grabbing the other pieces of the band, Dave and Adam as they formed Jasper and put out their CD on my new label Ruckus Records, in 1994. The Cherry Poppin' Daddies grabbed Adam for a bit for some of their touring needs and Jasper broke up a couple months after I put the CD out. David went on to work a lot with Mike Johnson of Snakepit and later Mark Lanegan, solo and Dinosaur Jr. fame, recording on quite a few albums. Max and the Elgin drummer split off from Charlie to form Porchfire for a brief stint then he moved to New York for a while and some of Max's work ended up on Tyler Hay's specialty CDs that he sold out of his new furniture design store BDDW (now quite successful). Charlie set his bass down to become a journeyman and didn't pick it back up until he had accomplished his objective. He still lives in Eugene and continues to be involved in various music projects. Birdie Jo - Transient Knows the System (Cassette Only, 1995)

Michael - Drums
Pedro - Bass/Vocals
Scott Kirkpatrick - Guitar

I've been sitting on this one for a long time, sorry Scott! I did such a bad job with track increments on this one you'd have to go all the way back to my Three Pigs post to find a worse job. I never saw Birdie Jo, may have been just after my Eugene days. Hopefully a bandmember wants to chime in with some colorful stories, I don't have any!

Even later than usual, here is the third volume of our monthly series that began in July of 2015. Given the current state of things a picture of the torn down animal house seemed appropriate, not sure who originally took the picture. The Big I Am - Unreleased Demo (?) (1990 or 1991)

Jim Kelso - Vocals
Sam Oberholtzer - Bass
Scott van Dusen - Guitar
Scott Shively - Drums

I don't remember if this demo was actually released or not. I didn't know these guys although I did seem them play at Max's a couple of times. I thought their track on the Pollen Count tape was one of the standouts. I have a vague recollection of seeing a Big I Am tape at House of Records but it's been 25 years so hazy at best. Fortunately, former vocalist Jim Kelso found out about the blog and was kind enough to send this in. I will email him for track names and a band history because I don't have any of that information.  Here are 12 demo tracks plus the Colt 45 track from Pollen Count:

Mona Lisa Overdrive

Dave Camp (RIP) - Guitar/Vocals
Jason Sypher - Bass
Rich Cuellar - Drums

I just found out today that Dave Camp passed away in Portland last year after a battle with cancer; he was only 47 years old. I knew Dave a bit back in the late 80's into 1990 when Agrosoul was just splitting up and Mona Lisa Overdrive was forming. Dave's optimism and enthusiasm were rare qualities, genuine. I wish I had more to share from the Eugene days but the four tracks below are all that I have. The two tracks from Agrosoul are sourced from a soundboard tape of the band live at the EMU ballroom. The two Mona Lisa Overdrive tracks were recorded by me and Patrick Yonally on a Fostex 4-track back in 1990 at the band's practice space, as far as I know the only two tracks the band recorded in their brief history. I still remember Dave singing into my oven because we didn't have enough money for anything to throw reverb on the vocals. He was the one who thought of it! Dave was involved with numerous musical projects in Portland over the years and touched the lives of countless people. RIP Dave.

The Klorox Girls - I'm One, Me Too 7" (Grinning Idiot, 1995)

Nick Tucker - Guitar/Vocals
Mike Healy - Bass/Vocals
Gordon Kenyon - Drums/Vocals

I never saw the Klorox Girls but I was fortunate enough to obtain the single, only 300 pressed! Not sure whether the band thought of itself as a side project, Nick was also in Oswald Five-O, Mike in Kpants and Gordon in Compost.  This is the only single the band released. Not sure if they recorded more or not, probably would have been a good question to pose to Nick when we were messaging yesterday.  I wish things like that didn't happen all the time.  I also forgot to ask whether Mike or Gordon sang Rapunzel's unrest, sounds like Nick on Color My Imagination.

Here is the single with a bonus track by Beradino (Nick with Gordon drumming and maybe Mike playing Bass, Nick couldn't remember but Mike did record the track) which originally appeared on Mike Healy's Pollen Count compilation cassette (HERE).

Keven Dow - Guitar, Sound Engineering
Bruce Nealley - Drums
Xeres (aka Robert Shepard) - Saxophone, Toy Instruments
Dwan Shepard - Bass, Vocals, Trombone
Lewis Schroeder - Tape Loops
Dave Schwebke - Drums

Never got to see Fate vs Free Will Turn Signals, actually never even heard of them until I got an email from Robert Shepard with links to all the recordings posted here. I've had these for awhile now and should have posted them sooner, I've been digesting these over a period of time and they are now among my favorite Eugene recordings. Driving home late at night listening to these makes me feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie, nervous with a sense of impending doom. I mean that as a compliment to the band. Please check these out! Adickdid (1991-1995)

Kaia Wilson - Guitar/Vocals
Sara Shelton Bellum - Bass
 Nalini Deedee Cheriel - Drums

I first heard of Adickdid when I was talking to Robert Christie about the Pollen Count comp. I asked him if he'd heard it and he said "only the Adickdid track, I just play that one over and over" The band would later appear on my own cassette comp. Slaughter on 13th St. I never got to see them play, living outside of Eugene for most of the group's existence but the recordings certainly made an impression. Kaia would go on to release solo albums and play in Team Dresch and The Butchies. Deedee also played in Juned, The Teenangels and The Hindi Guns. Sara later played in Bella Low. Someone really should write in with a full history of the band or I guess I could stop being so lazy and just email them some questions. Anyway...

All-American Girl b/w Columbus (Imp Records, 1993)

The first single was released in 1993. The band had recorded a few tracks, I think with Mike Lastra at Smegma in Portland. Two of those tracks became this single, another one ended up on the Slaughter on 13th cassette-only comp, all the others are unreleased until now. Thank you to the band for allowing me to post them here. All tracks sourced from a cassette Sara gave me 22 years ago, man time flies!

Oswald Five-O (1989-1996)

Robert Christie (RIP) - Guitar & Vocals
Diane Beck (now Rios) - Bass & Vocals
Gary Schartz - Guitar
Joe Brooks (RIP) - Drums

The original lineup of Oswald Five-O only released one 7" ("A Love Supreme") but they recorded much, much more than that. A few tracks surfaced in 2006 on the excellent Jealous Butcher Records release "Nothing to Prove" which you should all immediately order if you don't already own. Diane and Robert gave me tapes of these recordings 22 years ago and, being familiar with Robert's inability to ever hold onto a Snakepit tape, I figured I'd better hold onto everything just in case nobody else did. Big thanks to Diane for permitting me to post these long lost recordings.

Rest in peace Joe and Robert, you are both deeply missed.

Okay so I don't remember everyone who was in The Falling Spikes although I did see them play a few times. I'm sure someone will ridicule me on the Facebook page and eventually provide the needed information. John Barley has been playing music in Eugene for a long time and most of you must've seen him in several bands. This record compiles all The Falling Spikes recordings with one exception but I can't remember which song that was, just that the master had been destroyed. Hopefully a few of the former Spikes will chime in with some history and let us know what the missing tune is.
